Our role
NHBC, (the National House-Building Council), is the standard setting body and leading warranty and insurance provider for new and newly converted homes in the UK. Our role is to work with the house-building and wider construction industry to provide risk management services that raise the standards of new homes, and to provide consumer protection to new home buyers.
There are approximately 20,500 house builders and developers on NHBC's Register (known as registered builders or registered developers), who agree to comply with our Rules and Standards when building new homes.
More than 80% of new homes built in the UK each year are registered with NHBC and benefit from our 10-year warranty and insurance policy called 'Buildmark'. Around 1.7 million homeowners are currently covered by Buildmark policies, and over the past 40 years, NHBC has protected more than 30% of existing homes in the UK.
Our staff
NHBC employs over 1,000 staff, including 350 building inspectors across the UK, who carry out and collect data on more than one million inspections at key stages of house construction each year. As well as inspectors, we employ surveyors, engineers, energy assessors, health and safety, training, registration and claims staff, who all deliver NHBC's key services to our customers. As a national company we have offices in London, Amersham, Milton Keynes, Droitwich, York, Edinburgh and Belfast.

NHBC has two main customer groups - new home buyers and registered builders and developers. We provide new home buyers with a 10-year warranty and insurance policy called 'Buildmark', and our comprehensive range of products and services assist registered builders and developers to improve the quality of new homes.
What we do
How we raise house-building standards
NHBC provides a broad range of services to the house-building and wider construction industry. Improvement in new homes is driven by the quality and combination of the services we provide to the industry, and through the customer feedback we receive on these services.
Key services provided:
- Registering builders and developers who agree to comply with NHBC's Rules and Standards.
- Setting and maintaining construction standards for new homes.
- Inspecting at key stages of new home construction.
- Providing building control services in England and Wales.
- Providing 'Buildmark', the most comprehensive warranty and insurance policy for new homes in the UK.
- The provision of technical and engineering advice, training, health and safety, environmental and energy-rating services for new homes and housing-related sectors.
